AI-assisted search builds answers from information it can access and interpret. For a local business, the strongest source is usually a clear website supported by consistent public business information.
No business can force a search tool to cite it. The practical job is to make accurate source material easy to find and hard to misunderstand.
Start with a crawlable source page
Give each important service one permanent page. State the service, customer fit, service area, useful boundaries, and next step in visible text. Use a title and main heading that describe the actual job.
Keep important information in HTML. A phone number shown only inside an image or a service list hidden behind a script may be harder to access.
Keep local details consistent
The business name, phone, website, service areas, hours, and categories should agree across the website and Google Business Profile. Publish a street address only when it is a genuine public business location.
For a service-area business, explain the cities or regions actually covered. A long list of suburbs adds little value when the page gives no local information.
Answer complete customer questions
An AI search question often contains more context than a short keyword. Compare:
- “accountant Auckland”
- “accountant on the North Shore who works with small building companies”
A useful page may need to explain client types, location, services, required records, meeting options, and the first step. Add only facts the business can support.
Show who is responsible for the information
Use a real author or business owner where appropriate. Date material that can change. Link to policies, credentials, official sources, or named service pages when they support the answer.
Structured data can label an organisation, service, article, or breadcrumb. It should repeat facts that are visible on the page. It does not create authority by itself.
Allow relevant crawlers
Check robots.txt and other access controls. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot access is required for discovery in ChatGPT search, while access still does not guarantee inclusion. Google applies its normal search eligibility and quality systems to AI features.
Measure carefully
Track indexing and queries in Google Search Console. Keep a small set of customer questions for periodic AI-search checks. Record the tool, prompt, date, answer, cited sources, and any material change.
This record helps find gaps. It does not establish that one page edit caused a mention.
BestAI's SEO & GEO plans for NZ small businesses combine weekly site checks with useful question-led content. The work stays tied to real business information and visible outputs.
AI-search answers vary and can contain errors. Verify important business, legal, medical, financial, and safety information at the source.
