How Much Should a Small NZ Business Spend on SEO?

Use website size, competition and required work to set a sensible SEO budget for a New Zealand small business.

A useful SEO budget starts with the work required. The monthly price on its own says very little.

One owner-operated business with a five-page website, one location, and clear services needs a different plan from a franchise, a national store, or a company entering a highly competitive market.

Four questions that set the budget

1. Can the website be updated?

Find out who controls the domain, hosting, source files, analytics, Search Console, and Google Business Profile. A low monthly budget will not help if nobody can publish an approved change.

2. How many services and locations matter?

One service in one city can begin with a short page list. Several services across several locations create more research, writing, review, and maintenance work. Avoid mass-producing suburb pages with nearly identical text.

3. What proof is available?

Useful pages need real facts: services, boundaries, prices where appropriate, qualifications, staff knowledge, project details, photos, and genuine reviews. Collecting and approving this information takes time.

4. Who reviews the work?

Health, finance, construction, legal, and other regulated or high-risk subjects need qualified review. Build that review time into the plan.

What a small monthly plan can reasonably cover

A narrow plan can keep one website moving. For example:

  • a short initial search plan;
  • two priority page improvements per month, each updating a useful page or publishing a focused article;
  • one scheduled technical and visibility check each week;
  • a small set of local and AI-search questions;
  • one monthly record of work and next actions.

This is a steady publishing and checking service. It leaves out meetings, paid media, extensive digital PR, full profile management, hosting, and broad multi-channel marketing.

When a larger plan makes sense

Pay more when the business needs website maintenance, Google Business Profile work, more frequent communication, more content, review handling, social publishing, or a dedicated manager. The extra cost should map to visible work.

Ask any provider to state:

  • the pages or content produced;
  • the check frequency;
  • the accounts they manage;
  • the report frequency;
  • what needs client approval;
  • what sits outside the price.

Avoid a provider that guarantees a ranking or cannot explain what happens in an ordinary month.

BestAI's current starting points

BestAI's SEO & GEO service starts at NZ$49 per month for one website. The NZ$99 Growth plan adds website maintenance, Google Business Profile management, a monthly check-in, and quarterly planning. The NZ$499 Pro plan adds more content, two social platforms, genuine review monitoring and replies, a dedicated account manager, and weekly reporting.

Choose the smallest plan that completes the work you can support with real information. Increase the scope when the business has more services, locations, evidence, or publishing needs.

Prices above are BestAI's public prices in New Zealand dollars as at 3 September 2026. Search results and enquiries are not guaranteed.
